Lao language to be taught in general schools
Lao will become one of the eight foreign languages taught in general schools, initially piloted in border areas.
The information was shared by Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son during a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to Vietnam, Khamphao Ernthavanh, on June 2nd.
Mr. Son emphasized that Vietnam and Laos share a special relationship of friendship and cooperation, with education being a vital part of bilateral collaboration.
The Ministry of Education and Training is preparing conditions to introduce Lao as one of the eight foreign languages in Vietnam’s general schools, alongside English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean (schools can choose one). Initially, Lao will be taught as a pilot for students in border areas and will expand once there are sufficient teachers.

The Minister hoped the Lao side would continue to provide support, especially regarding textbooks, teacher training, and the implementation of the project “Incorporating the history of the special relationship between the two countries into school curricula.”
The Ministry also requested the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports to consider making Vietnamese an elective subject in the Lao high school graduation examination and to introduce Vietnamese textbooks compiled by Vietnam into schools with such needs.
During the meeting, both sides stated they are coordinating to implement the training cooperation protocol between the two governments, covering criteria for selecting international students and solutions to improve training quality.
“The functional agencies of both countries should consider creating favorable conditions for Lao and Vietnamese students, including both Agreement and non-Agreement scholarships, with exemptions for visa fees and temporary residence cards while studying in both countries,” Mr. Son said.
Ambassador Khamphao Ernthavanh highly appreciated Vietnam’s assistance and thanked the Ministry of Education and Training for creating conditions for Lao students to study in Vietnam. She hoped that schools in Vietnam would continue to strengthen management and organize positive educational activities.

According to the Lao Embassy in Vietnam, in the past academic year, nearly 11,000 international students studied and researched in Vietnam, making it the top destination for students from this country.
