SSU Technique (Select – Self-explain – Use)
The SSU technique is an optimal three-step process for mastering new vocabulary: Select, Self-explain, and Use. First, learners select words that are truly useful; next, they self-explain the meanings in their own words to ensure thorough understanding; and finally, they use those words in sentences or real-life communication. SSU helps learners avoid rote memorization by encouraging active thinking, which anchors knowledge in long-term memory. Regularly applying this technique not only expands your vocabulary but also builds confidence in using the language across various and complex contexts. It is a highly effective self-study framework that transforms passive recognition into active linguistic competence.
