3 Steps to Learn Vocabulary Effectively That Not Everyone Knows

The problem is not what you study, but how you study it. Let’s explore the strategy to bring vocabulary deep into your subconscious so you can truly use it.

Distinguishing 2 Types of Vocabulary: Passive and Active

To study effectively, you first need to understand that vocabulary is divided into two layers:

• Passive Vocabulary: These are words you recognize when reading or listening if you have time to think. You can write them down, but you cannot speak them or recognize them quickly when listening.
• Active Vocabulary: These are words you can use across all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. You can say them immediately without thinking, like the phrase How are you?

The key is to accumulate more Active vocabulary than Passive.

4 Steps to Activate Your Active Vocabulary

Step 1: Look it up in the dictionary (Look it up in the dictionary)

A common mistake is only looking for the translation and ignoring other factors. To learn deeply, you must:

• Check the IPA phonetic symbols to know the correct pronunciation.
• Identify the part of speech and its word family.
• Learn in clusters (phrases): Do not learn isolated words, because a word can have different meanings depending on what it is paired with. Learning in clusters helps you understand the context and avoids confusion when forming sentences.

Step 2: Listen in real contexts

Instead of just learning with your eyes, you must use your ears to get used to how native speakers create sound chains. A great tool for this is Youglish.

• Go to Youglish and type in the phrase you just learned.
• The system will list videos from YouTube, Netflix, or songs that use that phrase.
• Listen to how native speakers pronounce it in different contexts to understand its usage.

Step 3: Make sentences with the phrase

After listening, you need to move to the production stage:

• The Rule: Create at least five sentences for each new phrase.
• If your grammar is not strong, search for examples online and then mimic their sentence structure.
• Apply it to your real-life situations, such as a presentation or daily work, to remember it more easily.
• Write it down while practicing to master both writing and pronunciation.

Step 4: Use it in a conversation (Use it in a conversation)

This is the ultimate step to move vocabulary to the Active layer:

• Force yourself (force yourself) to bring that word into your conversations.
• Try to find opportunities to use it at work or when talking to foreigners.
• If you can use it naturally in speech, you have truly activated that vocabulary.
